Example: Character Web

Build a relationship web of heroes, rivals, mentors, and factions to visualize story tension and alliances.

Example

Relationship Types

Use typed relationships (ally, rival, mentor, member of) to keep context clear and filterable.

  • Ally / Rival
  • Mentor / Protégé
  • Member of / Leads (faction)

Narrative Beats

Mark beats with tags to trace changing dynamics across chapters or sessions.

  • "chapter-3", "arc-1"
  • "falls-out", "reconciles"
  • "joins-rebellion"

Sub-groups

Cluster by faction or party to highlight intra-group ties and cross-group conflicts.

  • Faction-based layouts
  • Neighborhood focus around a character
  • Hide non-relevant categories

Steps

  • Add core characters and assign tags like "protagonist", "antagonist", "mentor".
  • Create typed edges: ally/rival/mentor/member of to factions.
  • Switch to a clustering or circular layout to reveal structure.
  • Focus a neighborhood around the protagonist to examine conflicts.

Tips

  • Use consistent relationship types to improve filtering later.
  • Tag beats when relationships change to track arcs across time.
  • When the graph is dense, hide unrelated tags or types temporarily.

Character Web Preview
